Microbots – The Future of Robotic Medicine

Reporter: Dr Graham Phillips

27 September 2007
In the future microscopic robots – microbots - could be used to travel inside our bodies, assisting doctors to diagnose and cure all manner of ailments.

What seemed like science-fiction in the 1966 movie Fantastic Voyage may soon resemble ‘scientific fact’, when tiny gadgets smaller than the width of four human hairs can be injected into our ‘inner space’ to observe, deliver medicine, provide electronic stimuli to the brain and possibly even operate.

TranscriptTranscript

Narration Remember 'Fantastic Voyage'?

Bunch of scientists hop aboard the Proteus, are shrunk down,
then travel through a man’s body, to remove a blood clot from his brain.

As befitted the psychedelic 60’s - the film was ‘science fiction’ at its most outlandish – travels through human 'inner space'.

Perils at every turn - bad acting… bad jumpsuits… and Raquel’s very bad haircut – and finally attack by really scary anti-bodies – or is that fairy-floss? Utter drivel, right? Well, maybe not completely…

Dr Graham Phillips Now we already have tiny medical devices that travel through our bodies. This one the Pillcam.

Each of those flashes is the flash light going off basically.

You just swallow it and it takes thousands of pictures as it travels through your body.

Narration But what the Pillcam cannot do – is fix any problem it encounters.

This is where Microbots come in – they’re designed not only to spot the problem - - but to do something about it.

So how long before we see the first functioning microbots?

Assoc Prof James Friend I think we’re looking probably within five years to have a prototype that really you know that can do all of these things.

Dr Graham Phillips You’re telling me that within five years you think you will actually have the technology ready to do this.

Assoc Prof James Friend I think so because we have the motor working next door.

Narration Professor James Friend is a microbot engineer.

Assoc Prof James Friend Graham, this is the motor right here. Can you see the small sphere. Yeah just. So how many human hairs thick? About 4 human hairs.

Narration This pencil shows how tiny the motor is.

It makes you wonder – how ‘low can we go’?

Dr Graham Phillips Do you think we’ll see a time where we’ll be able to assemble things atom by atom.

Assoc Prof James FriendYes, yes I think so, I think so. If you want to place a for whatever reason a particular kind of atom in one particular location you’ll be able to do that. You know the concept of robotics is sort of blurred here you know you’re talking about objects on the order of the size of human cells say or smaller.

Narration So how do you propel a microbot?

Assoc Prof James Friend You look at E. Coli bacteria they don’t have propellers nor do they have say fins for example and the reason is because of the effects of scale.

Narration At these tiny scales, machines are subject to different forces.

So the robot James is designing will propel itself in the same way as an E Coli bacterium.

Dr Graham Phillips Can you project forward 50 years – a 100 years – what kind of machinery will we have then.

Assoc Prof James Friend I think that there are opportunities for say epilepsy treatment… where this device might actually swim up into the brain and stay there and … and resets the brain to prevent it from falling into a chaotic cascade of confusion as it were before you have an epileptic event.

Narration But wait – there’s more – what about a machine – that’s really only ‘half a machine’? James and his colleagues are think about this too.

Assoc Prof James Friend Basically hijacked E coli bacteria to as a robotics device … where you strip out the innards of the E coli bacteria as it were and put your own functionality in there.

Dr Graham Phillips So its not a mechanical robot it’s a biological robot.

Assoc Prof James Friend Its a hybrid where you have a sort of a passenger as it were inside this E coli bacteria.

Narration It seems the ’fantastic voyage’ has only just begun.

Michelle Gardner-Quinn Still Missing

Michelle Gardner-Quinn, a 21-year-old senior attending the University of Vermont, vanished in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 7. Volunteers from the University of Vermont are searching hills surrounding the campus today for Gardner-Quinn as Michelle is still missing.

"We still remain hopeful Michelle will be located, "said Police Chief Thomas Tremblay.

Michelle was last seen at around 2:15 AM on Main Street in Burlington, walking back to her dorm room alone. She was on her way back to campus after celebrating a friend's 21st birthday, reports AMW.Com. According to officials, there is no indication that Michelle left on her own free will.

Police are still seeking more information on a man in his 20s driving a white Subaru-type hatchback who was seen trying to lure another woman into his car near where Gardner-Quinn was last seen 20 minutes earlier. A composite sketch of that man is in the works, Tremblay said.

Michelle is 5 feet 8 inches tall, and approximately 135 pounds. She has a stud piercing in her nose and was last seen wearing a gray peacoat, green button-up cardigan sweater, a light blue t-shirt, and a black Puma purse with white straps.

Chief Tremblay also confirmed that police on Tuesday searched a house in nearby Richmond that is home to the man last seen with Gardner-Quinn in downtown Burlington around 2:15 a.m. Saturday.

"It should be stressed that this is one avenue of investigation that is being pursued at this time and we remain open to all possibilities and continue to ask for the public's help in generating leads," police said in a statement. "No one associated with the Richmond address should be a considered a suspect in a crime at this time. At this stage in a complex case of this nature we are focused primarily on finding Michelle and bringing her home safely. Secondary to that, if a crime was committed it is important for us to identify anyone that may be involved in Michelle's disappearance but also to eliminate innocent persons from suspicion."

Brad Pitt Birthday Card to Jennifer Aniston Upsets Angelina Jolie?

By Cyndi James

Jennifer Aniston had a seemingly week long birthday bash. Her pal Courteney Cox was kind enough to throw her a nice party in Beverly Hills and the next weekend reports claimed that she celebrated with Sheryl Crowe. Even her ex love Vince Vaughn made an appearance at the first birthday bash. But it is another gesture from another ex, her former hubby Brad Pitt that has Angelina Jolie upset, according to a report set for this week's Star Magazine.

The report will claim that Brad sent Jennifer a nice card for her birthday and the item says his timing couldn’t get any worse. Star notes that Angelina is in a very vulnerable state, and is still mourning for her mother who passed away on January 27th from ovarian cancer.

When Brad sent his ex-wife Jen the card for her 38th birthday on February 11, signing the card "With Love, Brad" he shared the generous gesture with Angelina. And according to Star’s sources, "Angelina is unsteady and none of this went down well." The report details that Brad was well aware of Angelina’s emotional state long before the death of her mother and acted accordingly to prevent any outbreaks.

It notes an earlier report that on January 22, Brad refused an on screen kiss with sexy co-star, Megan Brown, on the set of his new drama The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. A source tells Star, “The feeling among the crew was that Angelina, 31, didn’t like the girl because she was stunning.” Angelina’s afraid he’ll fall for Megan, just like he did for her while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005.

An earlier report noted that Jolie and Brad didn't attend the Oscars on Sunday. Jolie took off to Africa while Brad remained in New Orleans with his mom and dad reportedly visiting the kids. Jennifer was in Hollywood and hit a few of the pre Oscar bashes. Did the birthday wish to Jen keep Brad at home and send Angie overseas?

The Four Man Plan - A Romantic Science by Cindy Lu

Cindy Lu was sick and tired of failed relationship after failed relationship. Like so many other single women, Lu knew she was a fabulous catch, but she sensed inconsistency between what she felt she deserved in a relationship and what she was experiencing. Struggling with the long-term repercussions of her father’s abandonment and a desire to live up to the happily-ever-after of her namesake, Cinderella, Lu took action.

Combining her self-proclaimed inherently Chinese skills in math and her past dating relationships, Lu developed The Four Man Plan, a systematic guide to finding the man of her dreams. After applying the Plan to her own life, she generously decided to share her treasure trove of dating wisdom with other fabulously single ladies and published her relationship tips in an easy-to-follow gem of a book.

For those of us girls who are more often single than not, The Four Man Plan may seem a bit daunting at first.

“Dating four men at once?” you may be thinking. “I can hardly find one!”

Never fear! According to the author, it’s much easier than it seems. Using Lu’s handy Mantris Graph, any woman can sort out the men in her life by placing them in one of four categories, each with its own requirements and level of intimacy.

As I made my way through The Four Man Plan, I expected to get a few chuckles and a lot of cringe-worthy advice. To my surprise, though, Lu’s laugh-out-loud cheekiness was only outshined by her pearls of tried and true advice, much of which can be applied to any relationship, whether strictly following the Plan or not.

The Four Man Plan is quick and spunky, accentuated by hilarious stick figure drawings that illustrate the anecdotes and principles Lu shares. The beauty of this book is that it far surpasses the average self-help book both in entertainment value and in actual solid advice. As I read Lu’s stories of her own disappointments in love, it felt like a heart-to-heart with a close friend. By the end of the book, I actually felt a bit sad that I was now on my own to fend for myself in the dating game.

Lu herself comes across as the cool older sister we all wish we had who spares us the agony of making our own mistakes by relating her own horror stories instead. The witty writing reads like a fun gossip session, and the pictures and graphs add cute touches along the way.

Ultimately, though, the best part of The Four Man Plan is Lu’s recurring message of self-respect and respect of other women in the same situation. We are teammates in this crazy game of love and relationships, and Cindy Lu, with this book, steps front and center as our captain.
